I have a friend who uses the word 'niche' to describe herself. Once I asked her to explain, and she said that she sees herself as different from other people - but finds words like 'unusual' or 'different' have such a negative connotation that she won’t use them to describe herself. Hmmmm.
As an artist, I'm used to hearing labels like different, weird, strange, unusual, emotional, and everyone's favorite, 'starving' artist.
Most artists I know love what they do, are well-adjusted, smart and happy (happiest when making their art). They're no more irresponsible, addicted, tortured or promiscuous than any other group of people. Is it more challenging for them to make a living? Absolutely - there’s no road map to creative achievement. But that just means artists have to work all the harder for success. Does that make them weird or different? Maybe - but it also makes them strong and truly courageous.
Although this piece is named after the Seether song I was listening to at the time of creation, it in no way is reflective of how I see myself or my courageous and talented tribe. ✨ I just happen to like the song.
